The 2016 FIA Awards gala dinner took on Thursday, 2 June 2016 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg. More than 1000 individuals from the financial services sector gathered to congratulate the insurance, underwriting and investment brands that provide the best support to the country’s financial advisers and insurance brokers. The event serves as a reminder of the complex relationships that exist between advice givers and product suppliers as they join forces to deliver the best possible financial outcome to consumers. Although product suppliers walked away with the accolades on the night the Awards are a celebration of the value that financial advisers, insurance brokers and other financial advice professionals bring to the industry. 2016 FIA Awards winners Short Term Insurer of the Year – Personal Lines: Santam Short Term Insurer of the Year – Commercial: Hollard Short Term Insurer of the Year – Corporate: Hollard Underwriting Manager of the Year: CIA Long Term Insurer of the Year – Risk: Discovery Life Product Supplier of the Year – Investment Product Lump Sum: Allan Gray Product Supplier of the Year – Investment Product Savings: Allan Gray Product Supplier of the Year – Employee Benefits: Momentum Product Supplier of the Year – Healthcare: Discovery Health Product Supplier of the Year – Health Insurance: Stratum Benefits Click here to read more Source: Financial Intermediaries Association of Southern Africa

1 July 2016 was the start of the 2016 Tax Season for Individuals. Be ready. We’re ready, South Africa. Let’s make our country great. During Tax Season, you need to submit your income tax return (ITR12) so SARS can reconcile the tax on your income and the tax-deductible expenses for the year of assessment (1 March 2015 - 29 February 2016). This may, in some cases, result in a refund. Tax Season runs from July to November every year. For provisional taxpayers who submit via eFiling, it runs until January of the following year. Important due dates
To get ready to submit your tax return, you will need to gather all your supporting documents which include the following: For a complete list of supporting documents, click here.

But, even if you have a critical illness policy, will you be able to afford the treatment you need? Colin Daniel One in six cancer diagnoses are for pre-malignant cancer, data from a local reinsurer show, yet critical illness policies typically do not provide benefits for these diagnoses. Both the rise in the incidence of cancer and the growing awareness of the need to be screened for the disease have increased the number of early diagnoses. However, if you have a critical illness policy that covers you for cancer, you are likely to find that it excludes benefits for pre-malignant, or stage zero, cancer. A dread disease or critical illness policy is a risk life assurance policy that, on diagnosis of one of a number of specified illnesses, including cancer, pays you out a lump sum that you can use as you wish. You can use the payout to cover medical expenses not covered by your medical scheme, although most assurers argue that the cover is intended to pay for lifestyle changes that result from your illness. For example, you may need rehabilitation or someone to care for your children or you may decide to follow a less-ambitious, and lower-paying, career path. For starters, your car depreciates in value every year, which means you could be over-insured, so your insurance premium may be higher than it needs to be. On the flip side, and this is where the nasty surprises can happen, you may be under-insured. No one wants to find that out when they have to claim. Our online calculator can work out an estimated retail value of your vehicle. There are 3 simple steps to follow: Step 1: Guess how much you think your car is worth. Step 2: Provide us with information about the make and model of your car. Step 3: The result. This type of risk cover is either not well understood or not taken seriously. Millennials in particular believe that ‘it won’t happen to me’ or ‘I’ll be able to overcome that’, but they too, stand to lose from a disability or a life event that may not allow them an opportunity to earn an income. Liberty’s latest Claim Statistics show that millennials claimed mainly for income protection benefits in 2015, with retrenchments being the main cause of claim (at 15.9% of all claims for this segment). “As the South African economy struggles to regain momentum, we have seen a steady increase in retrenchment claims. But this is not the only reason for income protection claims in this segment. Even millennials face the risk of disability due to illness or accidents – yet there is very little understanding as to why one should protect or insure their ability to earn and income,” says Henk Meintjes, Head of Risk Product Development at Liberty. Meintjes says that income protection cover, although part of a broader lifestyle protection solution, should be the first thing that a young person should discuss with an accredited Financial Adviser. “At the onset of your career, get an accredited Financial Adviser to walk you through the journey of what cover is relevant for you. At the start of your career, discuss income protection so as to ensure that your future earnings aren’t lost should you be disabled. It is also essential to maintain this cover later in life so that you can continue to fund the lifestyle that you become accustomed to through earning a salary,” he says. This vegetable garden will help many of the pupils have a meal before sending them home on empty stomachs. Feed a child not just for a single day, but sustainably and forever. The Daberistic team is proud to have been part of the day and will continue to support the project.
