Do I have to pay excess every time I claim?
Excess is the first amount payable with every claim. When a client reaches a certain age e.g., 60 or 65 the insurance company automatically waive basic excess. On some insurance lines like Vehicle cover clients can take out excess waiver (at an additional fee) for their basic vehicle excess at any time. With some insurance companies’ additional excesses like “driving with a driver’s license not older than 2 years” may still apply.
With a vehicle repair claim the excess will be deducted from the payment the insurance company makes to the panel beater. The client will be liable to pay the outstanding excess amount to the panel beater before taking delivery of the repaired vehicle.
With a cash settlement the insurance company will settle the claim amount less any excess, e.g. the claim amount is R10,000 the excess is R1,000 the insurance company will pay the client R9,000
Is there a option where I don’t have to pay excess?

If I have car hire, do I pay a deposit when they give me the rental car?
Car rental companies will require you to pay a deposit while you have their car. This can be an amount of money frozen on your credit card. They do this to make sure they don't lose money if there are any problems during your rental. For example, if you return the car late, damaged or very dirty, they will hold on to some or all of your deposit. Providing there are no additional charges at the end of your rental, the deposit will be returned to the same card. The security deposit amount varies per location, and by the type of vehicle you are hiring.
Can you give me an estimate price for vehicle insurance?
The insurance company takes many factors into account when calculating the cost of vehicle insurance.
Some of the factors the insurance company look at:
Why is my friend’s vehicle insure cheaper when we have the same vehicle?
The insurance company takes many factors into account when calculating the cost of vehicle insurance. No 2 people’s risks are exactly the same even if they drive the same vehicle.
E.g.
Mr X pays R1,000 for vehicle insurance.
Mr G has the same vehicle, but he pays R1,500 premium, why?
Why do I Have to take my vehicle for a pre inspection?
Most vehicles, except brand new ones, need to complete a pre-inspection within 5 days from your cover start date. This shows the insurance company your vehicle's condition when you join so that they can compare it when you submit claims in future.
You must complete the pre-inspection within 5 days from the day your cover starts, otherwise your future claims could be rejected.
What does it mean if my insurance says average will apply?
When an item is insured for less than the full replacement value the insurance company will not pay you the full amount of the loss or damage. The insurance company will also not pay you more if you are over insured.
You will be liable for the difference between the insured amount and the amount needed to replace all the insured property.
Let us assume you are insured for R500 000, but the replacement value of your property is R1 000 000. This means you are only insured for half of the replacement value. You must cover the other half.
For example, if you suffer damage to the value of R100 000, the insurance will payout the average which will be calculated as follows:
Insured for R500 000
Replacement value R1 000 000
Claim R100 000
Calculation:
- Date vehicle needs to be covered
- Overnight location and security (e.g locked garage, behind locked gates)
- Information about Regular driver (Who will be driving the vehicle most of the time):
- Name & Surname
- Date of issue of driver’s license
- Claims and insurance history
- Marital status
- Information about the vehicle (preferrable send invoice or OTP) + extras
- Use of the vehicle (private or professional. If the vehicle is being used for business/ commercial use it needs to be insured under a commercial insurance policy)
- Notation of finance house
- Additional covers needed (Vehicle hire, excess waiver, credit short fall)
What do I need to send to remove a vehicle from my insurance policy?
- Last date of cover (The last day that the vehicle will have insurance cover)
- Reasons for car being removed

The insurance company takes many factors into account when calculating the cost of vehicle insurance. No 2 people’s risks are exactly the same even if they drive the same vehicle.
E.g.
Mr X pays R1,000 for vehicle insurance.
- Mr X has had comprehensive vehicle, building and contents insurance for 20 years.
- Married, over the age of 25 and has had his license for 20 years.
- Does not claim frequently
- Rarely misses a payment
Mr G has the same vehicle, but he pays R1,500 premium, why?
- Mr G is under 25
- Got his vehicle license last year
- Has no supporting insurance cover (Like building or contents cover)
- No previous insurance history
- Therefore the 2 clients pay different premiums for the same vehicle because their risk profile is different.
